B&B Marzamemi

Two years ago whilst on a day trip down to South East Sicily to visit the filming locations for the Inspector Montalbano series, we visited the fishing village of Marzamemi. We had seen Marzamemi featured on BBC4’s popular TV programme ‘A Place in the Sun’ and it looked like our kind of place.

We stopped for a glass of wine and fell in love with its beauty, tranquillity and the bars and restaurants located in one storey brick buildings decorated with blue paintwork and adorned with bright coloured geraniums.

We vowed that we would return again and that next time we would stay overnight to soak up the chilled out nocturnal atmosphere.

As we always take Daisy our dog everywhere with us I searched for a dog friendly accommodation and that is how I discovered B&B Marzamemi.

Newly opened, B&B Marzamemi is situated in a peaceful location 150 metres from the fine sandy beach and the centre is in an easy walkable distance. It is the perfect place for rest and relaxation.

On arrival Alice was waiting for us with her beautiful new baby boy under the gazebo in the garden and she immediately made us feel at home, showing us to our gorgeous room for the night and also gave us a water bowl for Daisy. Dogs are treated like V.I.P’s here.

There are four unique beautifully decorated rooms named Nord, Sud, Est and Ovest (North, South, East and West).

Each room has been decorated in a seaside theme with a lot of love and attention to detail, using recycled items that have been stripped and hand painted to create something new. All the cushions and curtains are handmade even the drawstring bag hanging in the bathroom which contains the hairdryer.

There are creative little touches that make each room feel like home. In our bathroom there was an old door panel that has been changed into a glorious shelf. There is also eco-friendly soaps, shower gel and body lotion. We stayed in Ovest (west) room.

The house is set in a peaceful garden which has an area for lounging or reading a book, there is also a kennel for your pampered pooch which Daisy loved. After a game of ball with Daisy on the grass we walked into the village centre for dinner and came back to the comfort of our room looking forward to breakfast the following morning. From what I had seen on Instagram it was going to be fantastic.

Breakfast is served under the shady gazebo, there are table and chairs which have also been recycled and repainted with words such as Happy, Bonjour, Life and Joy written on the back. The main table under the gazebo is a restored door covered with glass.

Alice and her husband are the perfect hosts, serving a typical Italian breakfast of pastries, biscotti and a yummy moist homemade cake to die for, (Alice prepares one every day). There was also cereal, fresh fruit, yogurt with local honey and organic jams. Freshly squeezed Sicilian orange juice, water infused with Sicilian lemons and freshly brewed coffee. Even Daisy had a plate of dog treats.

We felt very much at home in this wonderful haven and it truly is a small piece of paradise in South East Sicily and we did not want to leave. But we left knowing that we had made new friends for life.

B&B Marzamemi is the perfect base for visiting the nearby Baroque town of Noto, Modica (famous for its chocolate), the Nature Reserve of Vendicari and many local beaches with crystal clear waters.
