The Odyssey is one of two major epics of Ancient Greek literature attributed to Homer. It is one of the oldest surviving works of literature and remains popular with modern audiences. Homer, possibly born in the 8th century BC, was a poet . Homer was revered in ancient Greek society and is considered one of the most influential authors in history. The first Greek colony in Sicily was founded at Giardini Naxos in 734 BC established with the name Naxos. Thereafter in 733 BC, by Corinthian settlers, the south eastern city of Syracuse became one of the earliest Greek colonies on the island. It quickly attained wealth and power, important buildings were commissioned, works of art created and sub-colonies were founded. The ancient city was up to three times the size of modern day Syracuse and was divided into five zones including the Neapolis (the archaeological park) and Ortigia (the original settlement).
