The Beginning of a Love Affair ……. Part I


Nine years ago my latest issue of Glamour magazine popped through my letter box, it was February so I expected the Valentines issue. Always a fan of the travel pages and looking for new places to discover I read the article “Alternative Romantic Valentine Weekends” and there it was, TAORMINA.

Where is this place I wondered, where was this photo of a beautiful islet called Isola Bella taken? Where is this amazing ancient Greek theatre with a smoking volcano as natural scenery?
SICILY … an island that was going to change my life.


After much research (me being me)and wanting a new weekend destination to celebrate our upcoming wedding anniversary I decided that a) me being a lover of ancient history and Greek mythology and b) my hubby being a Godfather fan and C) both being sun worshippers … this would be the perfect new spot for us.

And so our trip was booked, we found the beautiful Hotel Villa Sirina that was perfectly located between Taormina and the beach resort of Giardini Naxos and booked our flights.


The minute my bejewelled sandals stepped foot on the tarmac at Catania airport I fell in love and I was seduced by Sicily … two years later we bought our Sicilian home and thereafter White Almond – Private Sicily was born.

Sicily is a place full of myths and legends and there are many stories associated with the island. From the stories of nymphs and gods from Greek and Roman mythology to tragic love stories from an exotic era when the island was under Arabic, Norman and Spanish rule. Giardini Naxos ... My Town

Sixteen years ago this year we visited Sicily for the first time and we were immediately seduced by the islands beauty, culture, food and its people, so much so that after only three visits we decided to buy a home there. On one of our first trips we met our friend Gianfranco who was at that time working in one of Taormina's most famous bars. One evening we mentioned to him about buying a home in Sicily and he suggested looking at possibilities in Giardini Naxos, the seaside town located below Taormina in the Bay of Naxos, and we fell in love with its charm.
